President Obama met only with Democrats today on Capitol Hill. They met behind closed doors, giving the AP a chance to quip about a closed meeting on openess. This underlies the notion that absolutely all that matters is getting 60 votes. Pressure, not persuasion, seems to be the order of the day. Republican Senator Tom Coburn, a physician, said on Fox that good legislation should have broad support from both parties, with the fringe ignored. This bill plays to the fringe. But Democrats are under terrible pressure to pass this terrible bill. Of course, it would be better to wait and get some kind of bill with support from Coburn’s broad middle. This could turn out to be the worst weekend in legislative history.
