STATEMENT: INDEPENDENT WOMEN'S VOICE RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA BLAMING SEXISM FOR CLINTON'S STRUGGLES

It's Insulting to Suggest Sexism — Or Americans Lack of Comfort With "Powerful Women" — Drives Voting Behavior

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), the leading organization that fights for women and families by expanding support for policy and political campaigns that advance prosperity, freedom, and greater choices, released the below statement following President Barack Obama's Sunday New York City event where he said "There's a reason why we haven't had a woman president. We as a society still grapple with what it means to see powerful women and it still troubles us in a lot of ways, unfairly." Carrie Lukas, IWV Vice President of Policy and Economics, said:

"It's insulting to the American voters to suggest that sexism is driving people's decisions about who to support for president.  Our country is at a crossroads — Americans are worried about terrorism, skyrocketing health insurance premiums, and our still struggling economy.  They will focus on these issues — not whether a candidate is a man or a woman — when exercising their civic responsibility of choosing elected representatives to lead this country."
