It's no secret that many of our nation's most notable historical figures were far from perfect. But does this mean we should scrap certain parts of history so that America's background is less "triggering?"
That's exactly what a group at the University of Virginia is aiming to do. As IWF's Charlotte Hays reports, UVA professors and students are now demanding that the school's President, Teresa Sullivan, refrain from quoting former President and Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. Evidently the fact that Jefferson founded the university didn't dissuade these individuals from attending the school in the first place, yet they've reached the conclusion that it's completely unacceptable for a public university to quote its founder from time to time.
Here's an excerpt from the letter sent to President Sullivan, according to Reason Magazine:
"For many of us, the inclusion of Jefferson quotations in these e-mails undermines the message of unity, equality and civility that you are attempting to convey," read the letter.
Jefferson owned slaves and committed atrocities "against hundreds of human beings," according to several professors who signed the letter.
