WASHINGTON, D.C. – Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), which fights for women and families by expanding support for policy that advances prosperity, freedom, and greater choices, released the following statement from President & CEO Heather R. Higgins following the Senate confirmation of Betsy DeVos as the next U.S. Secretary of Education:

“Today, the Senate voted to confirm Betsy DeVos as the new Secretary of Education, marking an exciting time for the future of America’s education system. This confirmation comes despite efforts from teachers’ unions and other liberal groups to sink DeVos’s nomination by branding her as an enemy of public education.”

“But DeVos’s record shows otherwise. Betsy DeVos has dedicated her life to helping those who need it most, and her commitment to making our public education system work for all students and families is exactly what this country needs.”

“DeVos understands that parents, not the federal government, should have the right to choose which school best suits their child’s needs. Further, our schools should prioritize what’s best for our students over the preferences of the education establishment.”

“With DeVos at the helm of the Department of Education, we can rest assured that she will work tirelessly to ensure a better future for all our children. By giving parents more control over their children’s education and by fostering more competition and accountability in our school system, we can improve our public schools and ensure that all students—particularly low-income students—have access to a quality education.”
