Fresh off the Women’s March stage in Las Vegas, Cher took to social media to make fun of the way White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders looks and dresses. Her mean-spirited tweet leaves us wondering just how authentic was Cher's women’s empowerment message anyway?

In her speech on Sunday, 71-year-old actress and singer Cherilyn Sarkisian (or Cher) said she’s been alive for 13 presidents, but none like our current president. She called this “one of the worst times in our history.” Cher told the audience that women are going to be the ones to fix it because “if you want a job done right, get a woman.”

Cher gave the example of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. While Astaire gets the praise for being the best dancer in the world, Rogers’s prowess was overlooked. She concluded:

“Somebody said ‘yeah, but she does it backwards in heels.' And that’s what women are, we do it backwards and in heels.”

Cher made an interesting point about Fred and Ginger and encouraged women to “step up to the plate” because “If you don’t take it, no one is going to give it to you.”  However, her bashing of the president and her pessimism about the prosperous time women are living in was over the top.

Furthermore, any positive messages she gave about women’s equality were eclipsed the following day by a mean-spirited tweet directed at the White House press secretary. The tweet had a picture of two women in long dresses standing close together with a caption that read:

When called out by others on Twitter, Cher dug in calling Sanders the b-word and accusing her of lying.

If there is anyone who looks bad in all of this, it’s Cher. She applauds Ginger Rogers for her superior abilities, but denigrates Sanders for her appearance then calls her a profanity.

Isn’t feminism about celebrating the accomplishments of women regardless of how they look and dress? Too often women in politics are boiled down to their hair, clothing, make-up, and appearance regardless of their qualifications or track record.

Sanders is thriving in a high-level position as the face of the Trump Administration. This is after outlasting two press secretaries – both of whom were men. If anything, Sanders validates Cher’s comment that “if you want something done right, get a woman.”

It’s time for feminists, celebrities, women’s magazines, and the media to end their selective support for women while bullying those who espouse conservative beliefs – especially those in the Trump White House. Their bias is showing and it’s just not a good look.
