WASHINGTON, DC — In response to President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address Independent Women's Voice President and CEO Heather R. Higgins issued the following statement:
“A look back at President Trump’s first year as commander-in-chief shows how serious he is about keeping his promises, how much he has achieved, upending expectations even when everything seems to be going against him, and how he runs rings around conventional wisdom.
“Trump is changing America's course as he puts Americans first and implements many of the major policy reforms he promised during his campaign. He understood what too many economists don’t – that it isn’t government stimulation by omniscient bureaucrats that matters, but dispersed private action, that lower taxes and deregulating regulation run amuck really does affect the economic growth, and that confidence in the future mattes. Building a stronger America was his main focus of the year; tonight in his State of the Union, he explains how he will build on this work.
“Americans may not always like ‘how’ President Trump does his job, but they do like a lot of ‘what’ he is doing. Proof is in the polling data – most notably consumer confidence and economic satisfaction have surged to 17-year highs.
“Thanks to deregulation and the biggest tax cut and the largest tax reform package in this generation, we are experiencing an economic boom. More than 250 companies are doling out bonuses, wage increases, and increased benefits to workers as a direct response.
“We regret the absence of a discussion of our continued challenges with healthcare reform tonight. While it is unfortunate that there isn’t more will in Congress to take this on this year, we remain confident that this promise of President Trump is only delayed, not forgotten.
“Americans still want to see President Trump deliver much needed reforms, to give people better access and make health care more affordable, as well as to fix our broken immigration system. As his focus on restarting economic growth continues to pay off in the coming year, conventional wisdom will once again get rolled by President Trump as he accomplishes even more, and wins grudging approval of his successes by many of his current detractors.
