WASHINGTON, D.C. A coalition led by Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) urges Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to reevaluate H.R. 1620, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021 (VAWA), proposed by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee.

The newly-introduced reauthorization would replace the word “women” with “people” and include equity training in healthcare spaces, as well as elevating gender identity and sexual orientation over protection of women survivors. The coalition letter cautions that VAWA programs should seek to protect survivors and promote female safety and dignity over political agendas.

IWV was joined by Concerned Women for America, Heritage Action for America, Gun Owners of America, Family Research Council, and National Association for Gun Rights in this opposition.
