Dear Members of Congress,

For workers, businesses, and industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated extreme economic uncertainty. Now more than ever, policymakers look for ways to help those seeking gainful employment get the skills they need.

Independent Women’s Voice, which fights to enhance people’s freedom, opportunities, and well-being, is proud to support the American Workforce Empowerment Act, sponsored by Rep. Jim Hagedorn (R-Minn.).

Right now, the use of funds in 529 savings accounts are limited to those enrolled in degree and certificate programs. The American Workforce Empowerment Act would expand these tax-free savings accounts to non-degree technical training certificate programs for in-demand jobs in industries such as construction, information technology, and the medical field. Importantly, these opportunities offer an alternative to college for workers who want to pursue fulfilling lives without the debt and the political indoctrination that often comes with attending college.

There is no reason why the federal government should continue to subsidize, through 529 savings accounts but also through many other legislative and policy choices, the single pathway to success that runs through our nation’s bloated and corrupt university system. Families who want to give their children other options for post-secondary success, such as apprenticeships or other vocational training, should be given the same access to federal incentives.  The American Workforce Empowerment Act would do just that.

IWV thanks Rep. Hagedorn for his leadership on this issue and urges all Members of Congress to join him and support the Workforce Empowerment Act.

Respectfully,

Inez Stepman
