Dear Members of Congress,

Independent Women’s Voice, the leading national women’s organization dedicated to expanding support for common sense public policies among women, independents, millennials, and GenZ is proud to support Representative Owens’ resolution condemning the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in our nation’s classrooms.

America was founded on the principle that all human beings are created equal, and we have sacrificed enormous blood, sweat, and treasure striving to live up to that promise. Our nation has made incredible progress. But Critical Race Theory undermines our efforts by teaching that American institutions are inherently and irredeemably racist and by urging us to view one another, not as individuals or as Americans, but as members of either an oppressor or victim class based solely on skin color.

As the resolution notes, such teachings “stand in contrast to the overarching goal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prevent discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin in the United States.”

Rather than promote a deeply-flawed theory that balkanizes students and teaches them to mistrust one another, schools should teach students our aspirational founding principles, the mechanics of American government, and the history of our nation’s struggle for civil rights.

We thank Representative Owens for his leadership on this issue and urge you to support the resolution against the use of Critical Race Theory in the classroom.

Respectfully,

Hadley Heath Manning
