Dear Members of Congress,

Independent Women’s Voice, which fights to enhance people’s freedom, opportunities, and well-being, is proud to support the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act (H.R. 1615), introduced by Representative Kelly Armstrong.

The Gas Stove and Protection Act prohibits the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) from using federal funds to “regulate gas stoves as a banned hazardous product.” It also bars the CPSC from issuing or enforcing a product safety standard that prohibits the use or sale of gas stoves or substantially increases their price.

In the name of fighting climate change, over 100 U.S. cities and municipalities have banned gas stoves in new construction, and at least 20 states have introduced or advanced similar efforts. Now, the CPSC is eyeing a plan to impose nationwide restrictions and, concerningly, the Department of Energy has also released a proposal that would ban these appliances.

Proponents of gas stove bans rely on a single study that attempts to link childhood asthma cases to the use of indoor gas stoves. The study, as the American Gas Association has noted, “is not substantiated by sound science,” and the emissions profile of cooking with natural gas stoves is comparable to the emissions profile of electric stoves.

Almost half of U.S. households and most restaurants have gas stoves. These new policies will only lead to additional energy expenses, slower cook times, and strain on restaurant resources—all without any positive impact on the environment.

Thank you, Representative Armstrong, for your efforts to guarantee that Americans, not unelected bureaucrats, can decide whether a gas stove is right for their kitchens. We urge all members of Congress to join him and support the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act.

Respectfully,

Hadley Heath Manning
