WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) and Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) applaud bipartisan efforts to call for the resignation of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chairman Martin Gruenberg following last week’s House Financial Services Committee’s hearing and Senate Banking Committee’s hearing featuring disturbing allegations about the workplace culture at the FDIC.
Patrice Onwuka, director of the Center for Economic Opportunity at IWF, issued the following statement:
“Time’s up for Martin Gruenberg. His complicity and woeful leadership in the face of years of allegations of harassment, discrimination, wrongdoing, and retaliation cannot be ignored. Unlike other women’s groups that were loud during the MeToo era but silent on Mr. Gruenberg, IWF and IWV stood up for women at the FDIC. We appreciate that Chairman Sherrod Brown placed the victims and the reputation of the FDIC above party politics. We hope all of his colleagues in the Senate and House follow his lead.”
Carrie Sheffield, senior policy analyst at IWV, added:
“It is unconscionable that President Biden and other leaders like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Maxine Waters remained silent despite credible reports of rampant sexual and racial discrimination at a federal agency, the FDIC. Keeping Chairman Gruenberg in place was a partisan move designed to keep a destructive regulatory agenda in place—ahead of worker safety. We applaud Senate Banking Chairman Sherrod Brown and Ranking Member Tim Scott, along with House Financial Services Chairman Rep. Patrick McHenry for doing the right thing and calling for Gruenberg’s removal.”
Carrie Sheffield penned an op-ed in RealClear Policy calling for Gruenberg to resign.
IWF and IWV sent a letter to the House Financial Services Committee detailing their concerns with FDIC’s culture and banking policies. This letter was entered into congressional record during the hearing by Rep. Ann Wagner. Read it here.
