Our State Impact

Bureaucrats and elitists on the federal and state level are redefining language to fit a false narrative, all designed to erase that women exist as biologically distinct from men. As a result, women and girls across the country have been forced to sacrifice their opportunities, privacy, and safety.

We are fighting back. Independent Women has supported the passage of Stand with Women legislation in more than half the nation! We have defined “woman,” protected the legal right to single-sex spaces, protected the integrity of data describing sex differences, and supported women’s sports protections,
impacting the lives of over 75 million women and girls.

These legislative options to Stand with Women were developed by Independent Women to preserve the legal existence of women, as distinct from men. The legislative package includes:

  • Definitions of sex-based words like ‘woman,’ ‘man,’ ‘male,’ ‘female,’ and ‘sex;’
  • Legal protection to defend women’s single-sex spaces and opportunities (sports, prisons, locker rooms, women’s domestic violence shelters, etc.);
  • Protection of female sports;
  • Protection of the integrity of government-collected vital data statistics.

Our Stand with Women Act combines each of these model legislative options into a comprehensive package that not only defines ‘male’ and ‘female’ terms, but also protects female spaces and opportunities.

“Independent Women has risen to one of the most critical challenges of our day by single-handedly having the most impact when it comes to changing laws and helping protect women’s rights, spaces, and opportunities. I have had the privilege … [of testifying] in support of Independent Women’s Voice Women’s Bill of Rights. … I am honored to support this essential legislation.”

Riley Gaines, Ambassador at Independent Women

“I am proud to have worked with Independent Women’s Voice to amend Tennessee’s code to codify the most basic sex-based terms and ensure there is no confusion about the definition of male and female…. I was inspired by the Independent Women’s Law Center’s Women’s Bill of Rights when I introduced this legislation and am pleased we were able to enact this bill into law.”

State Senator Kerry Roberts (TN-33)

“Independent Women’s Voice has been at the helm of the growing movement to hold leaders accountable to stand with women. … [O]ne of my first priorities will be ensuring all West Virginia women and girls are defined and protected in our laws…. I look forward to working with Independent Women’s Voice and the legislature to codify sex-based terms in law in the upcoming session.”

Governor Patrick Morrisey

“If we want to prevent sex discrimination, we must codify sex-based terms. The common-sense Women’s Bill of Rights does just this. Traveling across the country advocating for women’s rights, it has become clear to me that every state needs to pass this sex-definition law. Independent Women’s Voice has already passed their model in 8 states, but we need to make that 50 states.”

Paula Scanlan, Legislative Liaison at Independent Women

“I have absolutely appreciated the leadership role that Independent Women’s Voice has taken in helping nationally to push to define sex. Idaho is the next state to join this push, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

State Representative Barbara Ehardt (ID-33-A)

“I am taking decisive executive action to ensure the true definition of the word woman, meaning a biological woman, is what guides the state as we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and sanctity of women across Oklahoma. As long as I’m governor, we will continue to protect women and ensure women-only spaces are reserved solely for biological women.”

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt

“The Women’s Bill of Rights legislative package affirms that women exist, as biologically distinct from males, and champions democracy. It’s designed to be so bipartisan that no sane person could oppose it. The democracy and transparency piece is particularly important, because judges, bureaucrats, and elitists across the country are warping ‘women’s’ spaces.”

May Mailman, Legal Director of Independent Women

“Enough is enough. Louisiana will not stand idly by and allow biological men to take advantage of opportunities for women. We want women across the country to know that your privacy, safety, and opportunities are valued and will always be protected in Louisiana. I appreciate Independent Women’s Voice and Rep. Wilder’s hard work on this bill.”

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry

Women’s Bill of Rights Declaration

  • Women deserve not to be erased.
  • Women deserve single-sex spaces and opportunities.
  • Women and girls deserve fair and safe single-sex sports.
  • Women deserve privacy.
  • Conflating “sex” and “gender” harms the rights of women.
  • To preserve female rights, leaders must Stand with Women and define sex-based terms, like “male” and “female.”
